September Tour
(Italy, Slovenia,
Zagreb)
Slovenia,
an interesting area with distinguished tradition.
Ribnica
is one of the oldest towns of Slovenia and has a rich history. A special
place here is occupied by the local Ribnica woodenware and pottery, crafts
which both have a distinguished and ancient tradition and which are closely
connected to nature. The greatest resource of this whole area is its
forests. Every
first Sunday in September there is the traditional and well attended Ribnica
fair of woodenware and pottery, featuring the production and sale of local
hand-crafted items. In recent times these activities have of course been
increasingly taken over by the industrial processing of wood, represented
chiefly by the furniture manufacturing plant of Inles, and by a number of
smaller manufacturers which are rapidly adapting their wood products to the
needs of today’s markets.
Pinerolo,
Italy, Population: about 35,000 inhabitants
EVENTS Pinerolo was the host city of the Curling
events and Paralympic tournaments at the 2006 Winter Olympics.
Pinerolo
has always had a great strategic importance; in fact it was a commercial
centre which leads to France. When it became under the French in the 16th
century, the king's best military architects changed Pinerolo into a
stronghold. The Duomo, built in the 11th c., was reconstructed in the 15th
century, but only remains, of the original Gothic building, the doorway and
the campanile (1425, unfinished).
